What a lovely book, especially now when many of us have been feeling very alone! The note from the author is so worth reading too, her comment about "our well-intentioned efforts to raise awareness of environmental problems, leave kids with the idea that the Earth is wrecked and it is up to them to fix it" This book helps negate that impression and leaves you with a warm and more hopeful feeling about our glorious planet. What a lovely book, especially now when many of us have been feeling very alone! First I have to comment on the total disconnect between cover and content. Cover makes it look like a light and fluffy chick lit read, and it most certainly is not. Funny at times yes, light - not so much. I almost didn't read this as who wants to read a book about a deadly pandemic when we are all living through one currently. But from page one I was hooked. A book that will stay in your mind for some time to come.First I have to comment on the total disconnect between cover and content. Just delightful! Queen Elizabeth turns Miss Marple in this charming, funny and well researched mystery. Loved the Windsor Castle setting, and can't wait for the next book in the series.

If like me, you have been calming your pandemic nerves by watching season after season of The Great British Baking show, then this is the book for you! Just loved this look at Britain and food rationing in the middle of World War II, with four very different women vying to win a cooking contest. If like me, you have been calming your pandemic nerves by watching season after season of The Great British Baking show, then this is the book for you! Wow, an amazing debut by Rebecca Hodge! Just discovered it was her first book, because as soon as I finished it, I rushed to put her other books on hold. So good, don't think I even looked up once while reading it. Page turning survival story, in more ways than one. Might have needed a kleenex or two along the way.Wow, an amazing debut by Rebecca Hodge! Wow, stayed up way too late to finish this one! Nice to finally read a "thriller" where you care about the characters. I had given up on reading this genre for a few months, as they were all blending together in one big formulaic mess, but this one broke the mould. I was so lucky to get this book just before the library closed. An absolutely wonderful and engrossing work on Churchill and his valiant efforts to see Britain through the first year of World War II. Nothing takes your mind off our current troubles better than reading about other people's woes! I rarely give a 5 star rating, but this book truly deserved it.I was so lucky to get this book just before the library closed. As Tolstoy said, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”. Sylvie and Paul are not coping well after the still born death of their daughter. After Paul breaks his ankle and is prescribed oxycontin, Sylvie in desperation, dips into his unused supply of pills and life become bearable again…until it doesn’t. A realistic and gripping look at middle class addiction, and how quickly it can happen. Could not put this book down, highly recommend! As Tolstoy said, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”. Whoo hoo, hang on to your hats for this one! Do not make the mistake that I did of starting it at home, then bringing it to work, only to gaze longingly at it sitting on my desk, dying to keep reading.

Read this in two days, could not stop reading once I started. This is a pattern for me with Tana French's books, I'm a huge fan and was so excited to start her new novel. However, I have to say I prefer her Murder Squad series to this stand alone, and the main character Toby made me want to shake him on occasion. And let's not even start on the ending of the book....

Had a bad day, and needed to escape into a book, picked this one up yesterday and headed out around the pool with it. Bad day receded...time went on...skipped dinner ...kept reading, only looked up when I finished the book to immediately put another of William Shaw's books on hold! So happy when I discover a great new author. Loved the somewhat tormented, but honourable main character, would love to see him again in another book, but not too sure that will happen.Had a bad day, and needed to escape into a book, picked this one up yesterday and headed out around the pool with it. So good! If you love historical fiction, this is one of 2017's best so far in my opinion. Reminds me of Code Name Verity, which is one of my favourites.

I hope this is a start to a new series, as it was a great read. Loved the main character and her sidekick lady's maid June. Atmospheric historical detail and a good mystery to boot! Can't wait for book 2 :)

I had been so looking forward to this, as Notes from a Small Island is one of my favourite books, however the sequel did not come anywhere near my expectations. Bill has succumbed to grumpy middle aged man syndrome, and I found the book negative and not very funny.I had been so looking forward to this, as Notes from a Small Island is one of my favourite books, however the sequel did not come anywhere near my expectations.
