This film is more a cinematic portrait of birds in flight either in small groups or in vast migratory formations rather than any in- depth study of bird migrations, but nevertheless a beautiful portrait. What is equally interesting is the special featurette "The Making of Winged Migration" which shows how the film is something between fiction and documentary. Much of it is staged with birds that have been raised from birth in captivity with "imprinting" creating strong bonds with their handlers and thus allowing the filmmakers to use them in creating many of the film sequences. It's an amazing feat and doesn't diminish the value of the film in any respect. The featurette also shows the complexities and difficulties in the creation of such a film.
