Item Details

A fresh and brilliantly told memoir from a cult favorite comic artist, marked by gothic twists, a family funeral home, sexual angst, and great books. This breakout book by Alison Bechdel is a darkly funny family tale, pitch-perfectly illustrated with Bechdel's sweetly gothic drawings. Like Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, it's a story exhilaratingly suited to graphic memoir form. Meet Alison's father, a historic preservation expert and obsessive restorer of the family's Victorian home, a third-generation funeral home director, a high school English teacher, an icily distant parent, and a closeted homosexual who, as it turns out, is involved with his male students and a family babysitter. Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and fiercely funny, we are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. And yet, apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "fun home," as Alison and her brothers call it, the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books. When Alison comes out as homosexual herself in late adolescense, the denouement is swift, graphic -- and redemptive.

the graphics made it a quick read, and i did not need to finish it because the ending just continues the events already repeatedly described.

Bechdel extends the autobio comics form by including numerous allusions to Camus, Proust, Joyce, and other literary greats. The result is an occasionally wordy, intellectualized meditation on her youth with her troubled, closeted father. Still, it's a brave work, intimate and frank where it counts.

Often presented to me as an essential for readers of graphica, I can't say that I was disappointed. The term "tragicomic" is certainly apropos here. Alison Bechdel writes (and draws) of her life growing up with distant parents, specifically her closeted gay father. As she begins to understand her own sexual identity she looks to her father's life as an answer for hers.

It's a painful story as much as it can be seen as funny at points. It's an LGBT history lesson in someways as much as it is about a daughter trying to understand her father - and one of the few ways they manage to connect is through books.

If you're a fan of memoir, of LGBT stories, graphica or not, you will love this.

Don't be put off because it's a graphic novel; the writing is terrific!

Bechdel masterfully weaves literary allusion, family stories, and LGBT history into this amazing graphic memoir. If you think you don't like "comic books" you are doing yourself a disservice by passing up this hefty achievement. Introspective, insightful, and witty. One of my favorite books of all time.

This book was my introduction into Graphic Fiction and what a gorgeous story. The author recounts her family life with her closeted gay father and her long-suffering mother. More tragic than comic.

There is something for everyone in Fun Home, whether you’re drawn to its stunning art, complex literary allusions or profoundly human core. Bechdel’s chronicling of her relationship with her late father is comprised of contrast: simultaneously heart-wrenching and hilarious, personal and universal. A must-read for graphic novel fans, and a great introduction to the genre for the uninitiated.

Bechdel knows a lot of big words and she wants everyone to know it. She reminds me of "friends" on Facebook who write extra long, verbose posts thinking they are witty and clever but really they are just coming off as huge egomaniacs. It's too bad her writing is so terrible because the story itself is touching and worth telling.

This book was okay. I agree with the reviewer that said that it just seemed like she kept telling the same story over and over again just added a few more details every time. The art didn't seem to follow in some of the areas. All in all probably not one that I will be recommending to me friends.
