I'll be honest with you, if you're used to reading modern comics, old-school Claremont stuff will probably be a bit jarring at first. All the thought bubbles and super-wordiness? It feels...antiquated. But I promise that you'll forget all about that a couple issues in and get sucked in to this epic story. It's truly a timeless classic. (You might even start to like the thought bubbles.)

If want to read super hero comics and can't decide what to get into, this collection of X-Men stories is a great place to start. This series was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the sixties. While previous marvel titles, like Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, were big hits with comic readers, X-men only had a small, but loyal following when it came first came out. It was eventually canceled and went into reprints. By the late seventies Marvel management decided to restart the title with new characters written by Len Wein and drawn by Dave Cockrum. However, it wasn't until John Byrne came on board as artist that things started to turn around. With great writing by Chris Claremont, the Dark Phoenix storyline would make the series one of the best selling comic books of all time. You don't have to be a fan of super heroes to read this. It's the perfect adventure sci-fi story for all ages. I highly recommend

Violence: Being a Marvel title there will always be a lot of fighting. This is to be expected. There is one or two scenes were the character Wolverine gets decidedly nasty which may be intense for younger children.
