A good read with insight into 3rd world vs 1st world medicine, and Ethiopian history/culture in the latter 20th century.

A++ All the way….A must have Book in all Libraries - worth the long library wait and WORTH the cost of owing! I would recommend this movie for all to read.

Personally I loved this book though I was sort of put off by the large amount of medical info at the beginning. This book has so many layers and has such a fascinating plot that I was drawn into it. susann

Just re-read this novel. It was as wonderful as I remembered it. The characters are so vivid and the story is epic, but not impersonal. Verghese is a great writer of both fiction and non-fiction.

I thought the book was truly well written, and the characters were lovable, flawed, and believable. I enjoyed the entire story up until the very end, which I found a bit contrived, but certainly not the worst in modern fiction. I would definitely recommend this to lovers of historical fiction.

Great book about growing up, learning about science and another culture, and contains very human experiences.

While I sort of think of this novel as an Ethiopian Thorn Birds, I found it to be instantly engrossing and quirky. I wanted to meet the characters in real life.

Great, great book. Interesting every step of the way with well developed, true to life, very flawed characters and taking place in Ethiopia.
