If I Stay by Gayle Forman This is a story about a girl named Mia, who’s life is just about perfect (or so it seems). Perfect parents, perfect boyfriend, talented, even a sweet, funny little brother. But Mia’s fairy tale life is turned upside down when her family and her get into a terrible, tragic accident. In the blink of an eye Mia is no longer in the car, driving to a family friends house. She is standing at the side of the road. After seeing the absolute worst Mia is shocked. She realizes she is in a coma, having an “out of body experience.” Mia is then rushed to the hospital in critical condition. During this story Mia remembers her past, narrating all the ups and all the downs. We later realize that her life was not so perfect after all. She must decide if it’s worth coming back to her family, her friends, her boyfriend…her life. If she should move on to whatever comes after this life or awaken from her coma and live the rest of it . If she should stay. I thought this book was really interesting and well written. It really brings out the idea that despite the difficult things we need to deal with, we must push through and stay strong. To live our lives even if some times we just feel like giving up. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good inspirational story that will help them get through, or anyone who is a reader looking for a good book.

If I Stay is a contemporary story that straddles the line between YA and literature. It's a tearjerker, first and foremost, that occasionally dips into the maudlin. But it's also the (non-linear) story of a life, or really just two or three years of a life. It's a romance, at its soul, that focuses on the power of love as opposed to the journey of finding it. I'm keeping this review simple because the book itself was pretty simple. Mia's decision is one I think most of us have considered, and her reasons for staying or going are both compelling and earnest. It's an emotional and relatively static read, but if you like contemporary stories based entirely in memory, you'll probably enjoy it.

More powerful and moving then I'd imagined, and poetic as well! The book takes you on an emotional journey that captivates, motivates, and then break your heart. The characters are enchanting and endearing, and the writing is poignant and artful.

I think I might be the only person with this opinion, but I did not like this book. For a book all about the most important decision ever, there's not much drama, emotion or actual decision making involved. Oh, and to make this a fun drinking game, take a shot every time she gratuitously mentions either the cello or punk music. We know she likes the cello, but seriously is it her entire life? Is it her only interest? There's an unintentionally hilarious, music themed love scene between Mia and her boyfriend where he asks her to "play him like a cello." Seriously. She uses a bow. I'll let you imagine how sexy that would be.

If I Stay was a book I picked up by chance. It turned out to be an amazing read. I purchsed the book and gave to a student of mine who I knew would love it. This is a wonderful story about making a literal life or death choice. Amazing, must read !!!

I read this book - but I was expecting more from it. It did not deliver. I will read the next book though, just to see what becomes of Mia.

I read this book because its going to be a movie. To my surprise it was a drag out process for me. I'm not sure if its because I'm an adult reading a teen book but she just took way.... To long to figure out her outcome. Sometimes I just wanted to scream at the book lol.

Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck... A sophisticated, layered, and heart-achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make, and the ultimate choice Mia commands.

“If you stay, I'll do whatever you want. I'll quit the band, go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I'll do that, too. I was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you go. If you stay.”
