High-flying army career women, both are victims of sexual harassment from their superiors; both are forced to resign from the service. And now they're both dead. Their unmarked bodies are discovered in their own homes, naked, in baths filled with army-issue camouflage paint. Expert FBI psychological profilers start to hunt for a serial murderer, a smart guy with a score to settle, a loner, an army man, a ruthless vigilante known to them both. Jack Reacher, a former US military cop, is a smart guy, a loner and a drifter, as tough as they come. He knew both victims. For Agent-in-Charge Nelson Blake and his team he's the perfect match. They're sure only Reacher has the answers to their burning questions: how did these women die? And why?

Add a CommentThis is the fifth book in the series. Jack Reacher is a great character and the action moves along... most of the time. Although some elements were worth a read, this book was a disappointment. The setup was intriguing but the conclusion stretched credulity. I found myself hurring through the story from the midpoint on. Have not done that in the other books. Even so, I am looking forward to the remaining books.
Enjoyed it - but found it very predictable
I found this Jack Reacher novel quite boring and tedious at times. I have read most of the series and this is by far the worst. Reacher came off as snobby and full of himself, more so than usual. Also, many pages are filled with his love for his girlfriend and making choices about his and her future... If you read "Tripwire" before this novel, his GF "Jodie" will make more sense. All in all, it was a long, drawn out mystery that did not keep me on edge nor wanting to see what happens next.
A long book, 500 pages, that takes the reader back and forth across the continent several times as Reacher, with his FBI assistant, try to catch a killer, this time of armed services women who Reacher happens to know because he investigated their complaints of sexual harassment. Reacher seems to solve the murders by thinking a lot about the clues as he tries to piece them together to identify the killer. However, we are not informed of the results of his thinking so the reader is in the dark just like Reacher's colleagues until the very end. To fill time or to show the passing of time, Child fills the pages with details/decisions about Reacher's private life which will explain why he is a drifter in the coming novels, and a subplot, the results of Reacher's efforts to stop gangsters in their protection racquet. It is these tellings that take up the pages of the story. Expect lots of description of the scenery as they drive along the highways and food eaten. Surprisingly, very little violence and sex in this novel.
A great addition to the Jack Reacher series! When Reacher is forced to team up with the FBI to solve a string of murders his skills are put to the test. This one is a real "locked room" style thriller!
I like these fast moving, quick action, mystery books. Great for a weekend read.
This series takes place in a world of good guys and bad. The hero is a modern day Conan the Barbarian, a man well versed in violence with a personal code of morality. This particular entry is fair. More enjoyable if you've bonded with the main character.
