Add a Quote"I have a theory which I suspect is rather immoral," Smiley went on, more lightly. "Each of us has only a quantum of compassion. That if we lavish our concern on every stray cat, we never get to the centre of things. What do you think of it?"

Comment
Add a CommentAn okay spy thriller. A bit more interesting then the recently produced film.
Don't like his spy writing - boring, read over 100 pages and then packed it in. Definitely an improvement over The Looking Glass War, however..

An absorbing and tense tale of a hunt for a spy who has betrayed everything and everyone. It provides a lot more insight into the characters than the recent movie starring Gary Oldman.
2012 Oscars: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, based on John Le Carré's novel, was nominated for best actor (Gary Oldman) and best adapted screenplay (Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan).
Carries you to the land of cold war spies and won't let you go. One of the best books written in this genre. Five stars!
Just saw the recent (Dec/11) feature film. I think Garry Oldman will give Alec Guinness a run for his money! Guinness is a superlative actor to be sure, but Oldman is amazing as well!
Not usually a spy novel fan - but this had me totally immersed in solving the puzzle!
This is one of my all-time favourite works of fiction. I loved the BBC series that came out in 1981, and is available from all GOOD video rental outlets! Frankly, I wonder why they would want to mess with a good thing by making a movie out of this. Perhaps it'll reach a wider audience, being a feature-length film. But I wouldn't be interested in seeing it because I so loved the original series - and there can be no one better as George Smiley than Alec Guinness, and Le Carré agrees!
I am looking forward to seeing the new movie version of this classic spy novel - perhaps it will clarify the many points in the story I found confusing.
