Summary
Add a Summary"Joey is a war horse, but he wasn't always. Once, long ago, he was a farm horse and a gentle boy named Albert was his master. Then World War 1 came along and changed everything. Albert's father sell Joey to the army where the beautiful, red-bay horse is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers not much older than Albert off of battlefields. Among the clamoring of guns, and plodding through the cold mud, Joey wonders if the war will ever end. And if it does, will he ever find Albert again?"

this book was utterly ah-mazing !!! i couldn't put it down!!! thrilling read!!! i read it in 3-4 hours!! this book is a must read for everyone!! only bad thing is everyone is dying!! totally loved it!! unquestionably 5 star!:)LOL!!
An excellent read!!! World War I (and horses are still being used in warfare to this day) from an equine eye. Asking the reader, just as Anne Sewell did when she wrote 'Black Beauty', to please notice we need kindness in the world. My "Grand-Dad" fought in this awful war, and was gassed in Germany, fortunately making it home with medals. He never spoke badly of the enemy., That type of thinking is explained in this book. This should be a required read for pre-teens and upward. I'm looking forward to reading more of M.Morpurgo's work.
Just a lovely story. I hadn't seen the play or seen the movie but when I'd heard it was a book first I decided to check it out. Yes, it is simple. Yes, it is a children's book. But I can't say it didn't move me, and I definitely can't say I didn't cry at multiple parts throughout. It's a very sweet tale of people dealing with war and I definitely recommend it for a nice quick read one day. Just keep the tissues close.
Better than the movie; not so sticky sweet.
I was wary about reading a novel narrated by a horse but this novel surprised me. Joey's voice is clear and straight forward and other than the conceit that Joey understands what every human being says, never becomes unbelievable. Joey is in many ways an observer in the novel. Of course, as a war horse, he does a multitude of tasks, but he serves as an intriguing mediator between the reader and the other characters he encounters. The harshness of World War I is depicted masterfully, never flinching from the realities of war but never becoming too gruesome for its target audience of children. A moving narrative of the animals that played such an important role in the war and insanity that is war, the novel is a wonderful story for all ages.
Joey, is a beautiful horse who grew up with a loving caring master Albert. After a while Albert's father gets in financial trouble and has to sell Joey for more money. Joey was sold to the army to fight in wars, during the war he also helped as a horse that helps bring injured soldiers to the hospital. In the end Joey is reunited with Albert and is back on the farm where he started. I realy like that Joey was a very encouraging horse and never gave up.This story was great, I would recommend it to anyone.
This is the story of friendship and war, told through the eyes of a horse. Joey is a beautiful horse living his days on an English farm with his kind and gentle master, Albert. Albert may only be a boy, but to Joey he is the truest friend and best master a horse could have. But when World War I breaks out, and Albert’s father finds himself in financial trouble, Joey is sold to the army. Used to farm work and Albert’s gentle touch, Joey must be trained instead to endure the gunfire, explosions, and confusion of war. Forced to ride into battles, pull heavy artillery through deep mud, and carry the wounded, Joey learns the truth about war and sees the good and bad on both sides. He is brave, and he is strong, but always Joey thinks of his beloved Albert. Is it possible that Joey will survive this war and return home to England? Can he even hope to see his Albert again
2012 Oscars: War Horse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, was nominated for best picture and had six nominations overall.
This was a 5-hankie story of a boy and his beloved horse. The question of whether they will be reunited runs up to the very end of the book. I can see why Spielberg chose it for his movie, but the book is best!
