The ranks of Eleanor of Aquitaine's sons, introduced in Devil's Brood, have thinned considerably since three of them attempted to overthrow their father, Henry II. Lionheart, the 1st book in a new series, focuses on surviving son and new king Richard I, "Coeur de Lion," as he launches the Third Crusade. But before he can fight the Saracens in the Holy Land, he must first travel to Sicily to rescue his imprisoned sister Joanna and then to Cyprus to wed his bride, Berengaria. Meanwhile, back in England, his brother John has his eye on Richard's throne. Love Lionheart? Check out its sequel, A King's Ransom. Historical Fiction September 2014 Newsletter.

This is my first read by this author. if you really want to get a feel for this medieval time period, this is the book. Exciting, detailed and you get a feel for the personalities involved.

Wanted to like it more than I did - the shifting perspectives and the grinding continual reality of war ended up rendering Richard, celebrated warrior-king though he was, rather flat. This is the first SKP work I have not immediately purchased as soon as I read it,

I love most of the books Ms. Penman has written (so this comment is biased). This is one of my favorite books by her. She portrays Richard the Lionhearted as a very intelligent military leader and kind husband. I enjoyed reading how his military leadership conflicted with the crusaders. What I took away from this book was what a brave and thoughtful leader he was and how short life was. I especially enjoyed the voice of the women in the story - Richards wife and sister.
On the negative side - Penman could get too detailed about minor characters. I would suggest to gloss over them and stick with the main characters.

i love Penman, she is one of my all time fave historical authours. Her characters are rich and you feel like she knew each character and was there during the events. I cannot wait for the next one in the series. My all time favourite by her is When Christ and His Saints Slept.

Another solid read by Penman. Her research is impeccable, as always, and her take on some of the events is interesting. Maybe she didn't bring this Richard to life as well as she did Richard III, but still a good read.
