Wonderful! Massie is an incredible storyteller. An incredible woman in such an interesting time!
Enjoyable, easy read - what a fascinating time period, and what a fascinating (not to mention powerful) woman.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Russia or European history. "Great" portrait of a fascinating woman.

A very enjoyable read. Massie brings the people in all the European families to life with a down to earth style that makes you want to read on. Having visited St. Petersburg, it was easy to envision some of the places that are mentioned in the book.
A really shabby biography of Catherine II of Russia. Massie who wrote a very solid popular biography of Peter the Great, should be ashamed of producing this slapdash excuse of a book. It's very thin on any contemporary research and its main and sometimes seems its only source are the Memoirs of Catherine herself. The author gives no context of XVIII century Russia or Europe and this ponderous tome is mostly stuffed with anecdotes and rumors of the Imperial Russian court of questionable authenticity. This book has nothing to do with the historical research and anybody who is interested in the Russian history should keep away from it.
Detailed biography which, even though the subject matter can be quite convoluted in terms of the various complications and interests of all those royal families, is easy to follow and very enjoyable to read. Mr. Massie brings the various players to life and gives their characters depth and understanding.
A pleasure to read.
An excellent book that balances discussion of both Catherine's personal life and her political impact.
