Summary
Add a SummaryHazel and Jack are best friends, now and forever. At least that’s how Hazel sees it. Sure, she knows that Jack’s a little depressed because of his mother’s mental illness, but he’s always there for her no matter what. That’s a good thing since Hazel doesn’t like dealing with her new school and she definitely doesn’t want any other friends. Then, one day, everything changes. Jack suddenly turns cold on Hazel. He refuses to be her friend, and then without warning disappears altogether. His parents give one reason for where he has gone, but when Hazel learns that Jack was spirited away by a beautiful woman in a carriage she sets off into the nearby woods to find her friend and to save him, no matter what the cost (no matter if he wants to be rescued, for that matter). Trouble is, you can read all the books about adventures that you like, but when it comes to real rescue missions nobody can prepare you for the moment when you have to face your own problems.

Add a CommentAmazing book and this is such an emotional novel. I am almost cried when Jack's heart froze. LOVE it forever and i rate it 5 stars.
Excellent blend of realism and fantasy. Sets a slightly sinister tone immediately, and sucks you right in. Hazel will stay with you long after you finish. Perfect for reading on a snowy day, when anything might happen (but don't wait that long-- read it now!). Would make a great read-aloud for grades 4-7.
What do you do when your best friend starts to act strange and then suddenly disappears? And no one around you seems to notice? You go on a quest to get him back, you follow the breadcrumbs as far as they lead you, you try to stay safe in the dangerous forest. A fairytale that manages to keep the traditional mysteries, while speaking with a crisp and believable modern voice.
It was a cute teen novel. I did enjoy reading it. It was a page turner.
When I read the first page, I immediately knew that I would enjoy this book. I was right. I finished this in one day, because every page in the book makes you want to continue reading, and you can't stop until you finish. Great descriptions, the characters were portrayed well, and all of the fairytales that people hardly talk about nowadays were brought back to life in a modern, fun and twisted way. Amazing, I will never forget about this book.
Part of the fun of "Breadcrumbs" is that it references a number of children's fiction, folktales, and fairy tales. Here is a list. Can you find all of these stories in the book? Breadcrumbs •Wrinkle in Time by L’Engle •The Wizard of Oz by Baum •Harry Potter by Rowling •Alice in Wonderland by Carroll •His Dark Materials by Pullman •The Wall and the Wing by Ruby •Keys to the Kingdom series by Nix •The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by Lewis •The Snow Queen (Hans Christian Andersen) •Snow White ( Brothers Grimm) •Coraline by Gaiman •Phantom Tollbooth by Juster •Red Riding Hood (Charles Perrault) •The Red Shoes (Hans Christian Andersen) •The Fates (Greek Mythology) •Swan Maiden •Little Match Girl (Hans Christian Andersen) •When You Reach Me by Stead
This is a book that gives readers whole worlds to discover and discuss. It reinforces the oddities of Hans Christian Andersen’s tales, and ties them into a 21st century world. A strange, amazing, sad, thoughtful, one-of-a-kind original. You will find no other book out there quite like this one, no matter how hard you try.
Another retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's the Snow Queen, only featuring younger characters and slight twists in the plotline. Very enjoyable and touching; Hazel's determination and courage is not perfect and absolute but satisfying. The writing style is similar to that of the Cornus Chronicles, but the tone is different.
I read this and immediately put into my top 10 favorite books of all time. It's beautifully written and perfect for older elementary kids as well as adults. Would be a great read aloud or children's book club pick.
I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys fairytales, no matter your age. The allusions to modern fantasy stories give it a fun twist.
