Laugh out loud funny. At first I was put off by all of Nate's loser talk, but I stuck with it and came to love Nate as the quirky, funny, sweet character he is. I'm not sure kids will get all of the humor, especially the jokes referring to life in New York and referencing Broadway, but there is plenty in this book they will enjoy and to which they can relate. Better Nate Than Ever makes me want to break out in song!

It's been a long time since I've read a children's book like this. It made me laugh out loud. On top of being very funny it is also a touching story about one young boy trying to figure out who he is. The book It's a must read!

A laugh-out-loud head-long delight of a read that pleased this former theater kid enormously. The narrator is smart, talented, funny and a survivor of the cruel middle school behavior (if anything is immoral it's the bullying that kids have to endure). And what a great portrait of NYC.

NYPL Staff Pick
Thirteen-year-old Nate yearns for the bright lights of the theater. What he’s got is small town Pennsylvania where nobody understands his dream. But an open casting call for a Broadway musical just might be his big break . . . if he can make it to the stage on time.

This is one of the best books I read in 2013. Absolutely perfect for theater kids. I take great issue with the above mention of "immoral tone" - this is about a boy who loves musical theater. The word fag is used, and he mentions (very much in passing) that his father had an affair. As for sexuality, it is addressed, but the narrator says he's not gay or not-gay - he doesn't really know or care at this point.

Overall, very very funny and I can't wait to read Five, Six, Seven, Nate.

One star for plot, another for humor, a half for keeping interest.
-2.5 for immoral tone. Seriously, this is supposed to be a kids book.

This book is LOADS of fun! The hero is funny, daring and honest. And the author knows the experience of coming to Broadway from a small town and finding a place to fit in, so he's writing from the heart, too. Recommend to 4th - 8th graders who like humor and realistic adventure told by a wisecracking narrator. Don't miss out on this one!

I found this article about the book.* Based on that, it seems well worth reading. There is a sequel; if you are a young reader, please post a comment about this book and whether the library should get the sequel. You can ask for it under the 'using the library' tab > 'suggest a purchase'.
