World War Z

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time.

I was shocked to find I did not like this book. As a proud and devoted horror fan, on top of this story being such a wonderful idea, it came as both a blow and blessed relief when I finally admitted to myself that World War Z completely and totally bored me. I got a quarter of the way in, skipped through the meat of it, read the last few pages and then put a fork in it.

Absolutely amazing, the book really lends itself to becoming an audiobook. The fact that it is a collection of stories makes it great for short trips.

Generally well done zombie story. However, there are about 3 stories / points that are poor: 1) the blind Japanese elderly man fighting off zombies in the wilderness 2) stealing of the Chinese nuclear submarine with the family members of the crew 3) zombies surviving the depths of the ocean without being crushed by the overwhelming water pressure

Loved this audiobook! It included a full case of actors (including Alan Alda) that added to the richness of the story. World War Z is a wonderful depiction of the world as we know it, turned on it's head when a virus breaks out and all things survival become paramount. It is so good and sucks you in from the first second. I would have liked the audiobook to be unabridged but it was wonderful anyway and I will be going to read the book now.

Wide assortment of POVs from every level of society and activity. But missed one vital group: librarians, archivists or museum staff; people charged with preserving the knoledge of the past.

The book and story are truly amazing. but a heads up: these CDs are NOT UNABRIDGED. The case says on it " Unabridged Sections" which by its definition means ABRIDGED. This is only noticable when you are following along in the book; skipping a paragraph here, a page then, and adding a few sentences every so often.

The horror genres give a lot of room to play with more serious topics. Whereas vampire books seem to go off into sex, sensuality, and romance, zombie books, probably due to the influence of George A. Romero, lend themselves to sociology, psychology, and social critique. World War Z touches on a LOT of different subjects, from the military (battle fatigue, military brass pathology, bonding) to individualism vs. loyality, to reaction in the face of stress, fear, to celebrity culture.

Also impressive is the world scope of the book. "World War Z" isn't just a cute phrase, the book features interviews with people throughout the world, and how their society affected their reaction to the crisis.

Brain Candy!!! - This is the only zombie story everyone needs to hear. It is a tight and entertaining traipse through today's social condition with enough brain candy for everyone regardless of their love or hate for the zombie genre. This incredibly fresh take on an otherwise stale storyline is made even fresher with the addition of a horde of accomplished narrators. If this doesn't get you thinking about the world you live in, you might be a zombie.
