Great story though she sure left an opening for a sequel - in the last paragraph!

I'll try my best to not spoil the big twist here. It comes on rather early and, upon reading the preceding pages again, can be seen coming once you know what you're looking for. At the time I was a bit shocked and was convinced I had missed something.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I'm a sucker for Victorian Gothic and I really did like the way things were going up until the moment when the book becomes something else. After that point it didn't really succeed in engaging me. Maybe because I hadn't expected it and was now dropped into a different kind of story. In the vein it isn't even a particularly good telling of that sort of tale. It's been done better by others before. The Quick does get points for managing to avoid use of a particular word for the vast majority of this 500+ page book. That was another problem, it just got so long and a bit rambling. I love atmospheric prose as much as the next person but it just wasn't doing it for me.

I can't help but feel there may be a sequel coming too. If you make it through until the end you'll see what I mean.

NYPL Staff Pick
This debut novel reads like a penny dreadful about a mysterious, elite club in Victorian London. Owen deftly moves this gothic tale along and its unexpected twists and turns are quite unlike its simple beginning.

A sinister and intriguing tale of horror with many twists, turns, and complications. Readers of Gothic novels love will love this one and hope the author returns with more.

Excellent vampire novel taking place in old London.... good vampires vs bad vampires; good vampires gone bad; and a sister trying to save her brother after he had been changed.
