Retired detective Dave Gurney is pulled back into the world of crime-solving by a cryptic letter from a stranger who claims to know his darkest secrets. This is a tense, fast-paced read that will keep you guessing until the very end .A…

Think of a Number has everything an enjoyable thriller should: complex, interesting characters; an intricate plot with a baffling mystery; accomplished prose that takes you deep into the consciousness of the main characters; and relentless…

If you're a fan of the Netflix series Mindhunter, or the book by John Douglas, you'll enjoy the Dave Gurney series of novels.

I've apparently read this (and in fact own it). Since it's the first in the series and I don't remember it, consider re-reading before going for the next book. Downloaded to Kindle.

I got caught up in the story quickly and the puzzles were satisfying. I thought it was a little too long, and afterwards, hardly any of it really made any sense (explaining why would involve lots of spoilers.) (What did surprise me was…

One of the most phenomenal murder mystery debuts I have ever read! Thoroughly enjoyed matching wits with this killer and scratching my head as the author took me through the twists and turns of the labyrinthine murders. How DID he do…

When an author repeats the same clue four or five times, I think he has a low opinion of my intelligence. When he repeats the same clue ten or 12 times, I think he has no respect for my intelligence. But Verdon has the record for the book…

This book is one heck of a surprise. Talk about a REAL page turner. Every one is a discovery. The suspense is kept till the end. Clues are everywhere but we're kept in the dark and quite confused. This is my first Verdon as is Verdon first…

A little slow developing but about half way through it did pick up.

This book was recommended to me by a customer. I was not disappointed and plan to read more books in the series. A fantastic edge-of-your-seat thriller full of twists and turns that I literally could not put down.

A very good read from a first time novelist - it was hard to put down. A man receives a disturbing phone call then some letters( in poem form) that seem to reveal personal info that he could not possibly know.He gets help from an old…

It's an intriguing mystery that, once unraveled, becomes disappointing. Much like a magic trick being revealed. I found there to be enough flaws to not give the book a higher rating. For instance, I found every character in the book…

Very good writing style. You find yourself wondering, along with character Gurney, what are the links in these murders. Great read; will check out more by Verdon.

Somewhat interesting thriller. As a security pro, I was impressed by the use of social engineering--but I also recognized it long before it was explained in the book.

Former NYPD super-detective, Dave Gurney, gets a call from an old friend, terrified by weird threatening notes. Soon the friend has been murdered, just as he feared. Dave gets called in to help solve the puzzle. Besides a cool plot this…

Think of Think of Number as a thinker's thinking mystery about thinking about a deadly puzzle, and you will revel in its serpentine plot. Much like a "closed-room" mystery, wherein the deadly deed is done with impossible circumstances,…

Extremely well written and thought-provoking story that keeps your interest right to the last page. Couldn't help but try to figure out the unusual clues as they were presented. Hope to see more from John Verdon in the future.

Started off really well, but got only faintly plausible halfway through. A bit of a lag at the midpoint, but kept me interested to the end. Impressive for a first-time author!

Well done in many respects but not worthy of the hype surrounding it.Verdon shows promise and if he can avoid the caricaturisation of characters and situations in future novels, may grow into a first rate thriller writer. This first novel…
