Book review (The Tiger: a True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant) The Tiger is a thought-provoking piece that uses the story of a man-eating tiger in Russia's far east to explore how people (especially in the East and…

This is an exciting read I simply cannot finish within 2 months time. The print is small, single spaced and must be an inch thick, 306 pages without the notes. Maybe another time.

John Vaillant's Tiger is every bit the monster you hoped it would be. He introduces the reader to Primorye, the russian far east--one of the only places on earth where sub-tropic and sub-arctic climates merge on the Taiga, and life is a…

I’m primarily a reader of fiction, so it is a rare event when a book of non-fiction captures and holds my attention like this one did. It is a book that is difficult to categorize. Is it a treatise on the Siberian tiger, a majestic and…

Although the story evolves around a man-eating tiger, it goes into depth about the regions in the far North-East of Russia. The desperate condition of the Amur Tiger reflects the same of so many of our wild mammals - the elephant, whales…

Centered around the deadly hunt for a man-eating tiger in Russia’s Far East, this book is so much more than a simple hunting story. Valliant expertly provides a fascinating look at life in Russia’s Taiga and Primorya Peninsula, and the…

The narrative thread alternates between providing background information (the people, region, cat-primate relationship, etc.) and relating the story of the man-eater. I found the former plodding at times, whereas the part about the tiger…

This was a neat glimpse into Eastern Russia during the 90's, and a good real-life adventure read. There were several tangents one has to trudge through or skip, but overall, a decent read.

A shocking, sometimes gruesome tale, not for the faint of heart..... but a story about an isolated area of Russia that most Russians donèt even know, an are so impoverished that its inhabitants will do almost anything to find food for…

Wow, I love John Vaillant's writing. This story is absolutely brilliantly written, with so much detail. He clearly did amazing research on the subject matter. This is the true story of a Siberian tiger living in the Taiga, near…

The setting is a remote village in Russia’s Far East where life is often very desperate and difficult. When a tiger seems to be targeting and killing people, a team of trackers is called in. Vaillant follows the tiger, the inhabitants of…

I found the descriptions of post-Soviet Russia and the Russian Far East more interesting than the story line itself.

Well researched--very informative. There are many subjects covered besides the tiger. One feels such respect for the tiger and such a feeling of empathy!

I found The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant a very compelling read. I was fascinated in learning about this event and about both the history and geography of this remote corner of Russia. I also learned a…

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival --- written by John Vaillant. This is the story about a tiger. That much you might have guessed. It is an amazing tiger. The tiger is amazingly large; amazingly intelligent; capable…

A great Canada Reads 2012 selection! I guess I've never really given any thought to tigers (any kind of tiger) until this book. The subject matter is extremely interesting as is the setting. Set in south eastern Russia on the Sea of Japan…

great read..couldn't put it down. Didn't know who to cheer for the most. It is sad and tragic that these magnificent animals are near the end of their time on this planet...a great loss indeed

Highly recommended! Vaillant is a brilliant writer who takes the case of a man-eating tiger in 1997 Far East Russia, and builds a whole story combining the people, the history, the place, ecological impacts, conservation, evolution, and…
