Featuring magnanimous characters and a knotty plot, the story is too much but it's a classic. Collins creates drama and suspense with ease (i.e. there's a doppelganger).

This is a very good read. A true mystery with intriguing characters and a lovely use of the English vocabulary.

This is a book I completely enjoyed. The performers were very well suited and the story was full of twists and turns so that this is one I would consider listening to again on audio.

I read a lot of classics but this was just too overwritten and tedious. After about 1/3 of the way through I tossed it aside. It feels like I've done this before so my comment is mostly to remind and warn myself not to try it again in a…

One has to be into the Dickensian writing style of lengthy descriptions, heart-on-sleeve emotions, vague allusions to inappropriate actions, and complex family relationships to enjoy this 600+ page novel. I struggled through 175 pages…

Lots of excellent comments by people who did read (or listened to) this VERY long tale (about 1200 pages) which captivates by its suspense (one roots for the good guys), the richness of detail in its characters, the exposition of a society…

I put more than 7 hours listening to this book and finally gave up. It was simply too slow and adjures to follow.

Good. The Moonstone was better, but this is still good.

Gripping mystery drama written in 1860 when there were no telephones (at all) and people had to walk, ride horses/carriages or trains to get around England. Letter writing by post or messenger was the only communication, and one wonders…

I love mysteries and why it took me so long to read this classic is my mistake. The twists and turns in this 19th century mystery are many. As a 21st century woman I struggled with the concept of how little control women had over their…

An exceptional mystery - full of twists and turns!

A real delight. The cast does a very good job, not just in their narrated character but in a reasonable consistency of the other characters they have to portray in conversations. Glen McCready narrates Walter Hartright’s sections well but…

I read this as an ebook, in bits and pieces over the course of several months. Probably that does not do it justice, but I suspect that if I’d tried to read it through, I would have got tired of it and quit. It’s written in a leisurely…

I read this book on a recommendation by Nora Ephron, and it didn't disappoint. It's not only a page-turning mystery, but it has a rip-roaring villain and a great female protagonist -- both somewhat rare in Victorian literature.

I returned this book to the outdoor curbside drop on or about Jan 29, 2014.

As with other works that were first published in serialized installments (from Dickens to Armistead Maupin), the episodic quality is part of its appeal. Piecing together a puzzle through multiple viewpoints; wrongful incarceration in a…

I haven't yet finished the epub ebook I downloaded from the Gutenberg Project but I've been surprised how well this book wears for an 1860 serialized novel labelled as one of the first mysteries. Really worth a read. I'm intrigued to read…

This is one from the BBC list that I really liked, and after so many duds, I feel like the list has a chance to redeem itself. I'm surprised I have never heard of this book before. Collins was a contemporary and close friend of Dickens,…

"For Christmas last year, I was given a novel that had never crossed my path but was hailed as a “must read” by many of my friends. The Woman in White, written by Wilkie Collins, was published in 1860 and uses multiple narratives to reveal…

Highly enjoyed this novel. It has a very complex, and well put together, plot. Reminds me of The Forgotten Garden; however, I enjoyed this much more.

The most engaging classic I've read. Collins is a master of story telling and character development. Written in the mid 1800's this mystery represents well the features of Victorian society, female lower legal status, wealth and poverty,…

An exciting and wonderful read. One of my favorites. A great detective story and interesting look at the class culture of the period. Be sure to read the introduction. It offers great insights.

Supposedly one of the first suspense and thriller novels in the English literature, the novel is engrossing as the reader tries to unravel the secret of the woman in white. A truly worthwhile read!
