A New York Times BestsellerSuffocated by her unexceptional life, Carrie Bell longs for a chance to begin again, and is granted that chance, terribly, when her fiancé is injured in an accident. This is a riveting novel about self-knowledge and the conflict between who we want to be to others and who we must be for ourselves.

What do you do when your fiancé becomes a quadriplegic? Carrie struggles with what to do. She’d been finding herself less in love before the accident, but now she avoids Mike as he remains in a coma and then awakens to find himself helpless. She falls apart and when a friend offers her a place to live in NYC she flees. She does find love, but in the end she discovers what really matters. As I read this book, I “was” Carrie. I struggled along with her as she figured out what do to. It is seldom I have some complete empathy with a character. But it’s quite plausible for any reader to find themselves in Carrie’s dilemma.

Nothing has ever changed much in Carrie Bell's life in a small Wisconsin town - not until her fiance is severely injured in an accident. After a painful summer of hospital visits and the realization that she is no longer in love, she flees to New York, to a new life, and a new relationship fraught with its own unanswered questions. This first novel from Ann Packer raises some complex and thought provoking questions about responsibility and loyalty.
