This book is excellent for understanding dog behaviour. It certainly wasn't the book I thought it would be, in fact it was better. The valuable lessons the author learns from training police dogs. He certainly knows how to problem solve in order to bring out the best in the dog. This book has open my eyes and made me realize that there is so much to take into consideration as to why some dogs behave the way they do, especially when you didn't get the dog as a puppy. The dogs may have been abused, not socialized well with other, people, children. dogs or other animals and different environment. A well socialized dog is a calm and confident dog. This also extends to the owner who also becomes confident from the work and relationship with the dog. The key in training is CONSTITENCY AND UNDERSTANDING BODY LANGUAGE. Our behaviour has a enormous impact on their behaviour, as they are always reading our body language and are more aware of us then we realize. This is their way of communicating. Once we understand that, we can adjust our body language to better communicate with our dog and what we want of them.
I have a 12 year old dog, that I adopted from the SPCA when she was 6 months old. I also adopted another dog at the same time who was 9 months old. Both different breeds and drive. I've done obedience training and agility. They would respond differently to the same setting or environment. Looking back I wish I had this book it would have helped me overcome some of my own fears and challenges in the training process.
