There’s no mincing words with William Elliott Whitmore, a man much younger in years than his crooked creak of a voice would suggest. On the riveting “Mutiny” he sings about a politician he would like to consign to hell, “He don’t need no water, let the motherf***er burn.” In a similar vein, on “A Good Day To Die” the horses are fed and it’s, you guessed it, a good day to die. Blunt, yet sometimes strikingly poetic songs, clearly inspired by American folk, blues, and gospel music, Whitmore is backed by acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, chorused vocals, and occasional percussion. But the focus is always on Whitmore’s voice, which is arguably as distinctive as those of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, or Captain Beefheart. Heady stuff!
