Gives a good picture of the Depression era and its values. At one point Annie, who is about 12, raises a toddler while holding down a job at the grocery store and dealing with criminals. At another point in the story, she is shipwrecked on an island. Nowadays Daddy Warbucks would be arrested for negligence since he is always losing Annie, but times and values were different back then.

Despite all the bad luck she encounters, Annie is really good-spirited and never seems to mind, and solves all her problems on her own. She doesn't really need Warbucks, who really is of no help to her. However, Sandy, Annie's dog, is often quite helpful, and never seems to lose Annie.
