Anna Karenina in Louisiana. If that sounds appealing, you may like it, but I prefer the original. It has a great start at a resort on the Gulf of Mexico in the late 19th century, but the story slows, because our protagonist Edna has few obstacles in her way. Her husband is lukewarm at best, and willing enough, when it comes to it, to let her go. Edna's own feelings about her husband and children are just "eh." And if you believe Ms. Chopin, Louisianan society had no problem with a young married woman moving into a house of her own, away from her family. And if they did, Edna doesn't care. But suddenly, an insuperable obstacle, which really needed more exploration, appears, and the story ends. Edna may be awakened, but hardly anything comes of it.

Kate Chopin is a beautiful writer. her style is haunting, and way ahead of her time in terms of the empowerment of women.
