A powerful tragedy distilled into a jewel of a masterpiece by the Nobel Prize winning author of Beloved and, almost like a prelude to that story, set two centuries earlier. In the 1680s the slave trade was still in its infancy. In the Americas, virulent religious and class divisions, prejudice and oppression were rife, providing the fertile soil in which slavery and race hatred were planted and took root.

This was read by the author, and rather poorly! There were many passages that were ... what? just needing more superlatives than I can muster at the moment, but, I had much difficulty understanding what was going on: numerous shifts in points of view and piecing together the plot was impossible because of the author's monotone reading: every point of view and every character's dialogue was with the same flat voice. Could have been clearer and perhaps even great if they hired a professional reader and sound engineer.

It's wonderful to hear the author read this book.
