Hailed for its coiled eroticism and the moral claims it makes upon the reader, this mesmerizing novel is a story of love and secrets, horror and compassion, unfolding against the haunted landscape of postwar Germany. When he falls ill on his way home from school, fifteen-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. In time she becomes his lover--then she inexplicably disappears.

The Reader was a very easy, short read and the writing was good, but I can only just say that it was so-so. I wasn't captivated like I had hoped. Part of this may be on me, because I was listening to it and found that I would zone out for minutes here and there. It is still an interesting story- that combined with it's easy length and popularity, I would still recommend this.

I usually always read the book before seeing the movie... But in this case the movie came first. So instead of reading I decided to listen. The story. The narrator, everything was wonderful. For me this book conveys so much emotion. I loved it.

The book is excellent. The audiobook's narration by Campbell Scott I wouldn't rate as high. A little too rushed and flat for my taste.

I actually enjoyed this book, but would not recommend listening to it on audiobook. It's the kind of book that you want to savor and sometimes read the same passage over a couple times, because it's beautifully written. Especially the ending drags in the audiobook version.

Interesting and well paced. Before I listened to this, I could not imagine myself caring for a story of this nature, but I did. 7 of 10 stars.
