Americans are a "positive" people--cheerful, optimistic, and upbeat: this is our reputation as well as our self-image. But more than a temperament, being positive, we are told, is the key to success and prosperity. In this utterly original take on the American frame of mind, Barbara Ehrenreich traces the strange career of our sunny outlook from its origins as a marginal nineteenth-century healing technique to its enshrinement as a dominant, almost mandatory, cultural attitude.

I rather enjoyed this insightful and incisive analysis of the positive thinking movement; tears into the cancer support industry, corporate culture, and popular religion, all whilst taking into account social, cultural, and economic trends. I highly recommend it, especially for those (or for those one knows) who seem to be getting sucked into (suckered into, more likely) the 'success' genre.

A MUST READ. Wry and ironic. This is a terrific book. It really puts some historical and sociological clothes on the naked opportunism that dominates our culture. My only criticism is the implication that realism could have saved our society. Naked capitalism isn't hiding anything these days. It's still offering only two things: the carrot and the stick, and there's not enough carrot to go around. The woman who reads the audiobook version does an excellent job.
