When young Douglas wakes up one morning he decides that a hug is absolutely necessary and heads out into the world to track one down. But it has to be a certain kind of hug. Something big and tall and that doesn't give him splinters (tree hugs are splintery). His hug odyssey causes animals all over the forest a lot of discomfort to say the least. He tests out hugs on reluctant sheep that have to run for their lives. He tries tree hugs with owls (poor owl). He tries long-eared, rabbity hugs (poor, poor rabbit). Nothing is right but when he's just about to give up in hugless despair rabbit introduces him to the perfect hugging partner... MOM!
The pictures in the book are ridiculously funny! Douglas' eyes are wide and innocent as he wreaks havoc in search of his hug. The forest animals look alternately startled, cranky, and squished. Sometimes all at the same time. The details are what make this a laugh out loud book. After the squirming sheep hug one of them ends up stuck to his fanny and he is totally unaware. When he inadvertently used rabbit's tail to blow his nose rabbit's expression is wonderful. The final pages are the rabbit and all the sheep demonstrating various hugs like the Upside-Down Hug, Tummy Hug, and Unrequited Hug. It should be fun to test out all the different hugs with the one you love!
If you're thinking of buying a young reader (ages 3 - 7) a great picture book for the holidays, Hugless Douglas by David Melling would be a sure-fire hit.

Really cute story about a young bear looking for the best kind of hug. Good short story for toddlers or pre-school to grade 1. Would work well if paired with the picture book I Want a Hug. Different types of hugs at the end are adorable!
