Susie Linfield addresses the issue of whether photographs depicting past scenes of violence & cruelty are voyeuristic, arguing that if we do not look & understand that we are seeing at people, rather than depersonalised acts of inhumanity, our hopes of curbing political violence today are probably limited.

I decided to read this after "Evil Men" by Dawes, but I wasn't anticipating much in the way of insight, in large part because I was expecting photos with some text. Was I ever wrong! There are very few photos and its all text - well written, clear, intelligent, compassionate, and insightful. There are many questions scattered throughout the text; never gratuitously and always apt (they alone give one much to think about). Thorough notes, bibliography and index.
