I think the previous comments are mostly dead-on. The issue I disagree with, and wholeheartedly so, is the notion that the album suffers from "restraint" and "uninspired songwriting." On the contrary, I take the lyrical presentation as cynical critique of pop music memes/themes since the turn of the 20th century, and find it to be (and I'll stand by this) the most sophisticated sly jibe of an album I've EVER has the pleasure of: each piece positioned perfectly in the belief that no one really gives a fuck anyway. Oh man is it good.

Great album from start to finish. Some find it hard to get past Bejar's unique delivery but for those who can this is a very satisfying album.

"Suicide demo for Kara Walter" will slay you. And then slay you some more.

This album has an interesting take on easy rock of the late 70s and early 80s. Deadpan vocals, saxophone solos, a steady rhythm section and judicious use of synthesizers present a very polished and satisfying sound. 'Kaputt' dwells mostly in the contemplative, mid-tempo realm which ultimately holds it back. The lack of dynamic range only serves to highlight what at times is uninspired songwriting. I also can't get over the feeling that Destroyer's whole shtick is an act; the singers don't feel fully committed.
