A fun ride through 1850s California and Oregon with the Sisters Brothers, Eli and Charlie. Reams of homespun wisdom scattered throughout.

I fell in love with the spare language and was swept along by the story. The Gold Rush West was a time of contrasts - wealth and extreme poverty, high ideals and ethical egoism, dirt and the desire for cleanliness, death and violence and home. The exploration of the characters' motivations kept me listening. Highly recommend the audio!

I enjoyed the jokes and banter throughout this book. Eli is a wonderful character and tells a good story.
I find there's not much to say without giving things away. Suffice to say that this is an easy-going, relaxing, fun read.

My rating isn't really fair -- I only listened to one of the cd's, and it wasn't my cup of tea. *And* the fact that each CD is one massive 70-minute track is hugely inconvenient. i listen to my recorded books in 5 to 15 minute intervals, while I'm making dinner or whatever, and losing my place when I have to move on makes the cd almost unusable. (The cd player in my kitchen reverts to the beginning of the track after a period of time.)

I understand that the cd is humour, but I still found the subject disturbing (like horses being burned, before the story got underway). I don't like Coen brothers movies either, but if you do, you'll probably love this book.

This audiobook was flawed in format. There are no tracks on the discs: you must listen to the whole CD. You cannot fast forward or rewind. If you turn off the machine, you must start over and listen to the whole thing again. Very frustrating.

A western with fast draws, loyalty, adventure and the contrasting characterizations of two brothers, Eli and Charlie, whose family name happens to be "Sisters". The brothers heading west with a job to do kill Hermann Kermit Warm, who of course is somewhere in California, are side-tracked by encounters which eventually tie into one another. Simply put, this is not just another western story but an American adventure written by a Canadian shortlisted for England's prestigious "Man Booker Prize." The audio version will keep you riding along the trail until the movie comes out.

I LOVED this book & developed a huge crush on its narrator, Eli Sisters, a soft-hearted, slow-moving, sweet-natured, slightly overweight gun slinger, who, along with his brother Charlie, is on the way to San Francisco to murder a man. Quirky, witty, poignant—surely the Coen brothers will turn this book into a movie! // Audible version has a great narrator, too.
