I don't keep up with Marvel continuity well enough to know exactly when or how Tony Stark became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. but this is a pretty good story about some of the developments in a world that wouldn't stand still if one billionaire genius playboy created a flying suit of power armour. It looks like some of this plot (along with some of Warren Ellis' Extremis arc) was used for the Iron Man 3 movie, and as is kind of usual, I sort of prefer the cinematic version.

Surprisingly sober story on the price Tony Stark paid on preventing his five nightmares.
Bonus satire story was a big ouch on hoarder ,er, fanboy with too much cash & too little sense.

I was already very familiar with the world of Tony Stark, having had followed the Iron Man book for some years before the comics collected here were published. This arc is the kick off for Matt Fraction's run on the character, and as such establishes the ground rules and the setting for everything that was to follow during his creative arc. Fraction is so well suited for these characters that it still disappoints me how off he is handling other comic franchises, such as Thor, or the recent Fear Itself event.

Iron Man is dealing with a world that he has created. One where his Iron Man suit has kicked off a global arms race. One where every country, extremist group and corporation is trying to replicate the technology.

Tony is faced with the rise of a new threat, one that knows his technology and is determined to bring down Stark Industries.

Good collection, but my lack of background with Iron Man makes this not as engaging as it would have been for someone else.

Not the best read to be honest. But if you have nothing else to read it can certainly be a "filler". 2 out of 5 stars.
