Mary Downing Hahn is best known for her creepy, spooky children's ghost stories. This book is not a ghost story. It is actually a contemporary murder mystery for children. The mystery was pretty well done. It is fast paced, with twists and turns. There is an exciting action-filled climax. I always liked the creepy, timeless quality of Hahn's ghost stories. With this mystery, however, she seemed to be attempting to make it seem more modern. I found her modern references a bit jarring and forced. I also found the whole family abuse storyline unpleasant and in the end that storyline felt unresolved. I don't think this is her best book, but it was a decent, challenging mystery for older children.
