I bet I would have really loved this book if I were a teenage boy. Fast-paced, intense, and brutal, this book is perfect for reluctant readers. As a high school teacher, I can say with authority that De La Pena writes the way the teens I know speak (and probably think). While teens would probably love that, I found the constant profanity and puffed up braggadocio a bit grating. I also predicted the surprise revelation at the end a few pages in, but maybe we're supposed to be more insightful than the main character. In any case, a quick, intriguing read (especially for teens).

This book is absolutely amazing, I had no idea what was coming and I love how the author pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading. Shocking, powerful and a great read.

This book was a great read. It was slow, but it was something worth reading. Miguel was a great character. I loved the way Matt De La Pena wrote this book. IN the view of a juvenille deliquent. I was sad that I didn't get to know what Miguel did to get into the group home in the first place; until the very end of the book. I loved that after Miguel and Randell went back to the group home after they escaped and went on a journey.

By the way, I decided what I like about reading books. When I'm following what a character does in a book I don't have to think about my own life. Where I am. Why I'm here...I can just think about the character's life and try and figure out what's gonna happen...But when you read books you almost feel like you're out there in the world. Like you're going on this adventure right with the main character. At least, that's the way I do it.
