Detroit's story has encapsulated the iconic narrative of America over the last century: the Great Migration of African Americans escaping Jim Crow; the rise of manufacturing and the middle class; the love affair with automobiles; the flowering of the American dream; and now, the collapse of the economy and the fading American mythos. With its vivid, painterly palette and haunting score, sculpts a dreamlike collage of a grand city teetering on the brink of dissolution.

What akirakato said below.
And...
This documentary helps to explain in retrospect why Trump played so big Michigan, the jewel of the rust belt.
Detroit (or Detropia) is the capital of the globalization movement. As one interviewee said, it was Henry Ford that made Detroit, and it was Henry Ford that broke Detroit.
See especially the Extra materials that includes extensive interviews and commentary from those who live in Detroit and how they have been impacted by Detroit's manufacturing de-evolution.

This is a documentary about Detroit in trouble, originally produced as a motion picture in 2012.
Due to industrial restructuring and loss of jobs in the auto industry, Detroit lost considerable population from the late 20th century to present.
Between 2000 and 2010 the city's population fell by 25 percent, changing its ranking from the nation's 10th-largest city to 18th.
In 2010, the city had a population of 713,777, more than a 60 percent drop from a peak population of over 1.8 million at the 1950 census.
This resulted from suburbanization, industrial restructuring, and the decline of Detroit's auto industry.
In fact, the Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, declared a financial emergency for the city in March 2013, appointing an emergency manager.
Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history.
It is a sad story.
I guess the city has been having a number of incompetant mayors without vision for so long.

This is a beautifully made film; intriguing, intense, heartbreaking but hopeful, too!

Talk about eye-opening. This could well be the fate of Southern Ontario as the Canadian manufacturing sector continues to decline due to companies having products made off shore.

This is worth a watch - eerily familiar to those of us in clevnet land. I really feel though that they could do an entire mini-series because 2 hours felt like a light dusting over the problems and ideas going on. You could do just one 2 hour documentary on the artists moving into Detroit or 2 hours on the people being hurded into specific parts of the city and out of their current places. There are just so many legs on this centipede.
