Bart Layton’s documentary has all the makings of a Hollywood thriller as it delves into a lurid world of lies, mental illness, and emotional manipulation on a grand scale. Through the use of cleverly edited interviews intercut with true-to-life reenactments the whole outrageous house of cards unfolds in tantalizing increments with authorities on both sides of the Atlantic as well as the FBI and American Immigration getting caught up in one family’s ongoing dysfunction. And then, when the camera focuses on the exploits of a private investigator looking into the original cold case, things get even more interesting… Stranger than fiction and completely engrossing.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

This was a documentary that was shot much like a film noir, where the cinematographer modified hues and film speeds to accentuate the mystery and atmosphere. This was one of the most unbelievable stories that really happened several years ago, but with modern science could not happen today (if the intelligence agencies are as smart as they are supposed to be). The quick unraveling of the scheme and mystery makes up for the lack of understanding of what is going on in the first parts of the film.

Despite its true-crime trappings, The Imposter is an utterly gripping and sometimes heartbreaking documentary thriller cleverly told with narrative flair.

Definitely lots of twist & turns in this plot. Weird people get weirder by the minute & just when you think you have it figured out - you'll be surprised.

The Imposter is a documentary and reenactment of the case of a missing teenage boy from San Antonio Texas. A professional imposter (Frederic Bourdin) managed to get Spanish officials and the family to accept Bourdin as the long lost relative even though Bourdin looked nothing like the missing boy. The Frenchman Bourdin had pulled impersonation stunts all over Europe and was in fact wanted by the police in several countries. The whereabouts of the missing boy is still unknown. The Imposter is an interesting account of how Bourdin managed to pull off the impersonation even though it ultimately failed.

One of those strange-but-true stories that makes for a compelling film no matter how its made. And it was pretty competently made, with the involvement of all the principals.
