In this, the best of her Glamourist Series so far, Kowal takes a very well-known setting (Austen-era England) and imbues it with the most finely detailed fantastical elements. Kowal has created a world -- and a story -- that absolutely could not exist without magic. She continues to impress in this series, and, as with past books, this makes an excellent entree into the world of fantasy for someone who thinks they might not be a fantasy reader, because of the romantic (but not romance) elements and the military and political history.

Very little plot in this bk. And the byplay between hero & heroine is just annoying.

Her mother was peculiarly good in a real crisis, but, in the absence of difficulties, tended to create them.
