Set over the course of a weekend tournament for chess software programmers thirty-some years ago, return to a nostalgic moment when the contest between technology and the human spirit seemed a little more up for grabs. This is a pretty amazing spoof of computer nerds circa 1980. I can't imagine too many people under the ago of 60 liking this much as you would have to grow up in the early computer age to appreciate it. The low-rent motel ballroom was totally appropriate for the "Computer Chess Championship" with competing new age (at the time) nitwits and totally unappealing swingers.

what appears to be a legitimate documentary of an interesting time in history ... slowly unravels to be revealed as a mockumentary, e.g. a fake documentary. and the increasingly bizarre behavior and sexual content is in very poor taste. Definitely not suitable for young teenagers or children.

I found the deception to be quite offensive. legitimate spoofs tell you up front that they are spoofs.

the only slightly redeeming value offered by this colossal waste of time is the separate bonus interview with a real programmer who worked on IBMs chess playing system. but you could probably find similar interviews on youtube.

Also it was fun to see all that old hardware. I lived through that time and the technical aspects were fairly accurate.

P.S. to the ~programmer~ who does not understand why a program playing against a human could do better than when playing against another computer. It's because humans will tend to have a coherence to their moves. if the opposing program is behaving somewhat randomly, it will confuse attempts at pattern recognition.

I thought this would be a quirky documentary based on the packaging, not a fake documentary. I agree: unwatchable. Zero stars. I fast forwarded a lot. I don't even understand what it was about. As a computer programmer, it doesn't make sense that one of the team's computers was performing badly when playing against a non-human player. I don't get it about the swingers/birth re-creation people or why that other guy couldn't get a room and was sleeping wherever or why there was a room full of cats or ???

I'll keep this short:
I found Computer Chess un-watchable.

With its delightfully retro production design, Computer Chess is an inventive, intelligent, and humorous comedy that celebrates the eccentricity and uniqueness of its subject.

Rewarding and fun little indie. Had to force myself to stick with it but eventually found myself really enjoying it.
