To Understand Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, you should read this story. It is so informative, and helps you understand Kate better then ever before, and also understand the relationship between Kate and William. This book helps us understand where the mind frame is when William was in his twenties and onwards, and why it took him so long to finally say yes to wanting to marry her. A Very Strong, Independent Woman, A Devoted Wife, and a Mother you should never cross. I bought this book after reading it at the library, and have read it a couple more times since.
This is an enjoyable book about Kate and her family history. When she was a toddler her father worked in Jordan for a few years and Kate went to preschool there. They held lavish dinner parties. Kate's father is the descendant of aristocrats and distantly connected to William's ancestors. Prince Philip and the Queen share the same great great grandfather. Kate is the first wife of a monarch who has a university education. It is worth listening to this book on CD also available from VPL.
Why does this matter? IMO because we long for examples of how to live, of how to raise the game to something more than the day to day, dog eat dog routine. The British monarchy could have abdicated long ago, and gone off to live out lives of idle richesse. That they have not done so means something, means that they have chosen to live lives focused on what matters - things like caring for others, caring about the long-term, caring about the environment, and giving more than taking. Kate has signed on to this, and to a life that will always be subject to intense and sometimes unpleasant scrutiny.
