“Majid gave me a brief dazzling golden stare and then half-lidded his eyes again. I know when my life is being threatened.”

Mom came in to check on me. She sat on the end of my bed and we talked a little. But there wasn’t really much to say. She was married to Val. And I couldn’t bear to be around him.

I knew that the stuff they teach you in school about magical hygiene and how all magicians are psychopaths is just grown-up nonsense like if you never kiss anyone you won’t get pregnant (you have to wonder about adults sometimes; it’s not the kissing that does it).

Anyone who reads fairy tales should know never to let a magician keep his wand . . .

She and Val looked at each other. It was like something in a cartoon. I swear I could see the hearts and flowers rushing back and forth between them like on a golden sunbeam. It was kind of cute. It was kind of icky.

. . . I cradled it, like I would a half-grown puppy at the shelter who doesn’t understand that its ghastly ex-owners dumped it on the street for the crime of being a puppy.

its name had originally been Witchhaven. They’d changed it to just Haven after they cut the magic gene out of everybody in Newworld – and _witch_ become a word you didn’t use in polite company. (If you had to say anything, you said _magician_.)

he doesn’t take any crap from _anybody_. This would be okay if he had a less all-inclusive definition of “crap.”

2/5 stars. The world that Maggie inhabits is poorly explained, and why magic is so distrusted/policed against in Newworld. Jargon is thrown around without proper explanation. I can sum up the book as this Maggie hates her stepfather -> Maggie learns she's different -> She never fully gets to understand what she is by the end of the book -> She rescues he stepfather (and doesn't mind him so much) -> she develops a love for werewolf boy in one chapter -> meet up with aunts -> the book ends. This book is interesting, but disjointed, confusing and ends with no real ending or conclusion. Don't waste your life on this one.

Robin Mckinley can create a world in a few simple pages and that is what we face when we read Shadows.

this was ok, i've read much better books. why does she like the wolf dude anyway? If you want something with a much better girl-and-wolf boy love story, read The Lunar Chronicles (its in Scarlet) by Marissa Meyer. Or if you like magic, read Lord of the Rings. They are some of the beeest books of all times.

I didn't like this one at all. The story is confusing, and the author's prose is really weird and chunky. The people in the book were also odd. Idk, there was just something I really didn't like about this book. Don't recommend at all.

Addicting, as all McKinley books are. A good story with a fascinating idea and division of the world. It feels very full circle, and finally has a decent combination of a werewolf.

This is a really great book with unexpected surprises! I read a lot of teen supernatural books and I am really enjoying this one so far!
