"Fans of TV's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation should be in heaven" ( People ) stepping into the world of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, star of Kathy Reichs' electrifyingly authentic bestsellers.

She works with the dead, but she works for the living.

"Down time" is not a phrase in Tempe Brennan's vocabulary. A string of disturbing cases has put her vacation plans on hold; instead, she heads to the lab to analyze charred remains from a suspicious fire, and a mysterious black residue from a small plane crash. But most troubling of all are the bones. . . . Tempe's daughter's new boyfriend invites them to a picnic -- a pig pickin' -- in the North Carolina countryside, where a cache of bones turns up. But are they animal or human? X-rays and DNA may link the crimes, but they can't reveal who is closing in on Tempe and her daughter -- and how far they will go to keep her from uncovering the truth.

Such a formulaic writer. And so much self-centred monologue through out the book, distracting from the plot and casting the protagonist in an unprofessional light. But after all the plot turns the author crams all of the denouement in the last 5 pages so instead of gradually revealing how the crime is solved, it all gets explained in an intense conversation with her lover and her daughter at the end of the story. I would avoid this author in general and this novel in particular.

Never disappointing. Even "unlikable" characters are well written and interesting. Love the 1st person style.

Another good installment to the series. I liked some of the characters in North Carolina which were new. We've mainly been in Canada with Tempe in the earlier books. One of the main plot elements in this book is smuggling but there's also plenty of snuggling as Tempe and Detective Ryan finally get their relationship off the ground.

Wrinkled brown face, fuzzy gray hair, voice like ripping duct tape.

He was fine-tuning the rear view with the diligence of an astronaut adjusting Hubble.

I shot my daughter a look that could have frozen boiling tar.
