Egan's book tells the remarkable untold story behind Edward Curtis's iconic photographs, as he struggled to document the stories and rituals of more than eighty tribes. Even with the backing of Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, it took tremendous perseverance. The undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate. He would die penniless and unknown in Hollywood just a few years after publishing the last of his twenty volumes.

A truly astonishing non-fiction book about an unequaled accomplishment for the ultimate benefit of human kind by one individual and in various stages by his women associates and millionaire sponsors is recorded well . Sadly, the "play away" recorded books series shown, have been discontinued by KCLS.

Fascinating account of the life and times of the great photographer Edward Curtis, who spent years documenting the vanishing traditions of American & Canadian First Nations peoples. Teddy Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, Chief Joseph - Curtis knew them all & author Egan presents historical details & personal anecdotes that make history come alive. Very well told.

Timothy Egan weaves a good story about Edward Curtis' life and his significant contribution to native American history. The style allows the reader / listener to easily identify with Curtis' quest, the thrills of learning, the difficulties of the physical turmoil, and the pains of personal loss.

The audio book does contain a disk of images Curtis created which was a nice addition. The narrator's voice is strong and expressive. He also read Empire of the Summer Moon - a worthwhile yet darker read.
