This series is made in a wonderous location. Unfortunately the acting and writing need a spark to make it truly one of those great BBC series. I too, like others who have commented, would be interested in seeing more of this series, to see if it matures.
Visually stunning, this series is not something to have on in the background while you are doing dishes. If you have spent any time in rural Wales this may bring up some fond memories even in light of the subject matter as it did for me. Either way if you like an intense, thoughtful, detective drama that feels like a masterful painting, you may enjoy this show.
series 3 was released last year. series 2 was released 2 years ago. you could be waiting a while. if you like this sort of tv, you might consider investing $30 for an all region player. the region 1 releases are usually 1-3 years after the region 2 releases.
Each of the four moody mysteries unfolds slowly in the caliginous landscape of the west coast of Wales. Long silences deep with meaning draw out the dialogue requiring the actors to express so much of what their characters are thinking and feeling without words. One is struck by the poverty, the isolation, the damp cold, the need for community. In the final episode, profound grief, loneliness, and questions asked, but unanswered are particularly poignant. This dark, brooding atmosphere sounds depressing, but the series is very well acted and the mysteries are engaging.
Enjoyed the series - just need to pay close attention at times because of the accents.
Geography and time frame events which form our experiences. These, in turn, are molded into memory. When other people (strangers) are involved, their experiences, barring the provision of explanatory narrative, take on for us the guise of mysteries. Unraveling mysteries often recomposes our own experiences. This is what Hinterland is about; a series that portrays it very well indeed, moodily presenting the landscape, exterior and interior of dwellings, the turbulent quality of the enveloping light. Seeking a non challenging Hollywood scripted episode, with characters satisfyingly acting as if provided by central casting? Then this series is not for you.
Very interesting plots. I hope you will soon get seasons 2 and 3
Waiting for Seasons 2 and 3.
Well-done atmospheric mini series set in Wales.
Hinterland is bleak but beautiful. It is a bit demanding on the viewer but once you begin to relate to the characters you will enjoy it immensely. It's a bit of an acquired taste. Like a fine Scotch. Not everyone appreciates it. But as they say: those who like it, like it a lot. Cheers!
I give Hinterland a well-deserved four stars.
