Really an updated Nancy Drew type novel, except for references to life in the 1950's which a younger reader would not understand. Arrogant 12 year old. Following the plot would be a challenge for younger reader and there were several plot lines left incomplete, perhaps to be filled-in through a later novel.
As an adult reader, I must remember not to read this author again

This book is for the mature youth, reader, at least 13 or 14. The book has a complex plot.

First part of the novel was lots of fun, with Flavia getting her usual feisty footing in a strange setting full of wacky characters. A few scenes were laugh-out-loud funny.
Latter portion of the story unfortunately sort of petered out.
Much of the attraction of these Flavia de Luce books depends on quirky, outrageous character interactions. A noticeable lack at the end.

many clever turns-of-phrase; i chuckled throughout the entire book

Flavia has been sent to Toronto to her mother’s finishing school. On her first night there, a body tumbles out of her room’s fireplace chimney, starting her off on a new case. Whose body? How did it get there? And how to manage to investigate in a new city, a new country without a friendly police contact and around school lessons?

A wonderfully dark and creepy boarding school setting in which Flavia, as always, manages to sift through the clues to find a solution.

The setting change for this seventh installment in the Flavia de Luce series made for a nice change of pace, despite how much I missed the familiar supporting characters in Bishop's Lacey. I also appreciate how Bradley is slowly, slowly showing that Flavia is growing up, in subtle ways. I enjoyed this book, as it was interesting to see Flavia in a setting where she felt alone and less than comfortable, rather than the small village in which she's lived her entire life -- but at the same time, I'm hopeful for a return home in the next book.

Flavia is back, although this time she is totally out of her element as she crosses the pond to attend the same boarding school that her cherished mother attended. I loved this book as much as all the others in this delightful, wacky series.

Kind of disappointed in this one. I have really enjoyed the rest of the books in this series, so I always look forward to the next one coming out. However this one is missing something - the "Flavia-ness" that we all enjoy. Looking forward to the next one - hopefully that one is back on track.

I'm with the disappointed Flavia fans on this one. Not because of the change of venue per se, but because it left me with far more questions than it answered. What was the point of Flavia being there? It advanced the Nide story not one whit. All kinds of unresolved, thinly written characters. Hoping we get back on track next time.

Flavia is my favorite young sleuth! I love her chemistry skills and her search for truth at all costs. Can't wait to see her in action back at Buckshaw.

Flavia is a very smart and witty 12 year old attending Miss Bodycotes female Academy. When a body is found, in a most interesting way, Flavia sets out to solve the mystery. A fun read.
