Costume dramas have emptied pubs, wrecked social calendars, and launched countless careers. Seen on PBS, this series looks beyond the silks and velvets, sprawling manors, and addictive story lines to reveal how the best of them were made.

When a future historian finally writes "Costume Drama: What the Hell Went Wrong", a primary source will be this miniseries. The differences between the story-driven series of the past, and the star-driven series of the present is made sadly obvious. The level of intellectual and spiritual vulgarity is spectacular, peaking in the contention of one producer that Jane Austen could only aspire to write in the style of Andrew Davies. Pretty things; pretty people with lobotomies. If that's all you want, that's what you will get.

Limited to the ITV series and mini-series, but reasonably good fun nonetheless.

Must-see for anyone interested (obsessed?!) with British historical dramas such as Brideshead Revisited and Pride and Prejudice (just two of the many featured).
