I'd categorize this as "Prairie Noir". The characters are very true to life, the story is grim, and Marjorie Trumaine draws on the author's job as an indexer as well as his life experiences in the Midwest. Marjorie has more on her plate than any farm wife should ever have to cope with. She turns the horrible events of the story over in her mind, making indexes of the clues. She is a very likeable and human detective, and the components of her life--1960s, rural, Scandinavian immigrant families--are well portrayed, as are Marjorie's interactions with the other characters.

I really enjoyed this old fashioned style puzzle it out mystery, with the protagonist being an indexer. I've never thought about who compiles those... The story is dry, bleak and enhanced by the Icelandic immigrant history of the area, which also is central to the crimes committed. Lots to think about, a twisty plot and very well drawn characters. Memorable in this day and age of otherwise simplistic horror/suspense psychopath killer "mysteries". I look forward to the next in the series.

Fascinating and suspenseful, a protagonist you can really get behind, in a wrenching predicament made worse by a horrible series of murders way WAY too close to home. The 1950s - 60s era in rural North Dakota portrayed vividly, and the author's deep understanding of how people of those regions are really rooted in the land. A terrific mystery!
