1970, Arco, Idaho. Oren Quanbeck is a respected member of the community and science professor at the local college. When his daughter Grace returns from a missionary trip to Mexico she announces she's pregnant with the child of God. Distraught, Oren sends Grace and her sister Jory to an isolated home at the edge of the town. There, they prepare for the much-awaited arrival of the baby while building a makeshift family that includes an elderly eccentric neighbor and a tattooed social outcast who drives an ice cream truck.
When the moral-minded eldest daughter of a 1970s Idaho family returns from a missionary trip and claims she is pregnant with God's child, her strong-willed sister and she bond with fellow outcasts while awaiting the birth.

First the good: This is an easy reading story with a likeable character. There's enough mystery about events & tension to keep one reading. The story is so bizarre that one wants to read to the end to see how this situation is resolved.
Now for the bad: This is a YA book in hiding. The scenes and dialogues are Jr. High and are mundane, boring and nothing to do with the larger storyline. There's a lot of "cool kid", clothing and boy talk throughout.
This family is outrageously bizarre. What is wrong with these parents?!!!! Their actions are at odds and their reasoning is non-existent. None of the parameters of this story make sense in any way. Who sends 2 daughters (one of them 13 years old) to live in exile by themselves, expects them to live "normal" lives, not talk with anyone, and stay safe?
The ending is unsatisfactory and disturbing in many ways.
