"Libraries today are more important than ever. More than just book repositories, libraries can become bulwarks against some of the most crucial challenges of our age: unequal access to education, jobs, and information. In BiblioTech, educator and technology expert John Palfrey argues that anyone seeking to participate in the 21st century needs to understand how to find and use the vast stores of information available online. And libraries, which play a crucial role in making these skills and information available, are at risk. In order to survive our rapidly modernizing world and dwindling government funding, libraries must make the transition to a digital future as soon as possible-by digitizing print material and ensuring that born-digital material is publicly available online. Not all of these changes will be easy for libraries to implement. But as Palfrey boldly argues, these modifications are vital if we hope to save libraries and, through them, the American democratic ideal. "--

It is not possible for even the most creative librarian to do all the work of the analog past—providing all the services that library users have come to expect and to associate with great libraries—while also inventing the new digital future. Such an undertaking would be impossible even if budgets were climbing rapidly. There is a solution, however, one that requires libraries to accept the task at hand and join forces with libraries across the country to carry it out successfully.

Libraries have no choice but to collaborate in acquiring and preserving materials…Libraries also need to cooperate on the development of the technologies and the services that will make them relevant for the near-term future. This period of transition for libraries will be hard and expensive. It will require a great deal of innovative thinking, unpleasant trade-offs and changes in lots of jobs for lots of people. But it will pay great dividends to society, if done right, just as investments in libraries have proved wise—and paid off handsomely—for centuries.

Enjoyable, not only for the content and it's relation to my current job, but also for Palfrey's passion, which is clearly present in his personal insights and perspectives concerning the future of libraries.
