Eleven unique short stories that stretch from a rural Canadian Mennonite town to a hipster gay bar in Brooklyn, featuring young trans women stumbling through loss, sex, harassment, and love. These stories, shiny with whiskey and prairie sunsets, rattling subways and neglected cats, show growing up as a trans girl can be charming, funny, frustrating, or sad, but never will it be predictable.

I didn't get to read the very last story, because I wanted to return it to the library today but also had to catch a ferry soon after I got a chance to read. But ! what I did read (all the stories, no skipping) were soooooo good. I love how Casey Plett writes. someone told me its very simple and boring writing, but I thought it was super natural and fit the characters and their context as modern 20 somethings. And there was a lot of depth of emotion coming across from the writing.

My favorite stories, whose titles and character names I do not remember at all:

the story of the woman with her poor, talking cat who gets neglected as she has a long breakdown from her job as an escort driver (this one made me legit cry)

the story of the mennonite trans girl zeke who befriends the trans woman who put her up for a few days.

the "manifesto" that literally sounded exactly like so many people I know or have spoken to in my life, it was kind of scary how similar but also hilarious and vindicating.

the second to last story, winning, about zoe, moved back to her hometown of eugene, OR, after transitioning in new York, and the relationship with her trans mother.

I'm really glad this anthology exists and is part of the growing trans literary canon.
