"Laurain presents the story as if it were reportage, but with the confidence of an age-old storyteller."-- San Francisco Book Review

"Laurain's gentle, satirical humor remind this reviewer of Jacques Tati's classic films, and, no, you don't have to know French politics to enjoy this charming novel. Fans of Muriel Barbery's The Elegance of the Hedgehog will want this."-- Library Journal

"A hymn to la vie Parisienne . . . enjoy it for its fabulistic narrative, and the way it teeters pleasantly on the edge of Gallic whimsy."-- The Guardian

Heroic bookseller Laurent Letellier comes across an abandoned handbag on a Parisian street. There's nothing in the bag to indicate who it belongs to, although there's all sorts of other things in it. Laurent feels a strong impulse to find the owner and tries to puzzle together who she might be from the contents of the bag. Especially a red notebook with her jottings, which really makes him want to meet her. Without even a name to go on, and only a few of her possessions to help him, how is heto find one woman in a city of millions?

The Red Notebook has already been sold in twelve different languages. French TV is making a film of The President's Hat and the movie rights of The Red Notebook have been sold to UGC.

Antoine Laurain was born in Paris. He is the author of five novels, including The President's Hat .

Originally written in French and translated to English the author made reference to the "Lycée" a few times but after googling it I found it meant Highschool. Not sure why that particular word wasn't translated? I found the beginning a bit slow, but the characters are cute (I was rooting for Laurent even though he could have come across as a bit over the top) and at 159 pages this is nice easy book to read when you are pinched for time.

A more thoughtful, Parisian version of While You Were Sleeping. My colleague called it "delightful" and I'd have to agree.

I loved this book. I hope that our library system has more of Laurain's titles. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The characters were so well written that I felt that they might be my neighbors-those that I really liked and admired. This is a very enjoyable book. I'll probably be re-reading this many times

Not at all my usual genre, but so well-written that I was sucked in. A thoughtful, sweet story.

THE RED NOTEBOOK is one of the most delightful and charming books I’ve recently come across. It’s an easy, quick read (only 159 pages) filled with very likable characters. Part mystery and part romance, the story is set in Paris, The City of Light. I highly recommend it to those seeking an entertaining escape from the daily routine.

Highly enjoyable, fast read. Great language, and pace. Delightful characters. Interesting settings.
A winner all around, everyone seems to like this book.

What a find! Even better than Marc Lévy! Romantic, totally realistic (unlike Lévy), could actually have happened in real life. A study in just how far the power of the will can go, with a bit of luck occurring just at the right time, in making an effort to find someone. And all in 200 pages or less! I really appreciate authors who can write well without going on and on - giving just enough detail to keep a story moving, yet come across with a unique message. It is an art that not many can accomplish.

I loved this sweet, whimsical story. It's not complicated (you can probably read it in an afternoon), but it is perfectly told and perfectly satisfying.
