This was a charming book and I intend to read the others in the series. It is set in the early 1900s--a nice change from many other novels and has a nice small town feel to it. Very enjoyable!

While carrying this book around as I was reading it, people would ask me questions about what made it appealing. It was often hard to put a finger on particulars. But I can relate to Nell. Nell uses the stories of a favourite author to cope during terrible times. When life gets tough, tough Nell reaches for Wodehouse. And life does not treat her kindly. In the end, all she has left is Wodehouse and newfound friends. Before psychologists were readily available, people accessed what coping mechanisms they could, and Nell found what worked for her. I often reach for a book when I want to escape the dredges of ordinary life.
